The Stayers Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race that has been a part of the Cheltenham Festival since 1912. Run over a distance of 3 miles on the New Course, the race is open to horses aged four and older. It is considered one of the most prestigious long-distance hurdle races in the world and has produced some legendary performances over the years.
The Stayers Hurdle features 12 hurdles to be jumped and requires a horse with both stamina and speed. The race has been won by some of the greatest staying hurdlers in history, including Big Buck’s, Inglis Drever, and Thistlecrack.
The Stayers Hurdle is a race that requires both physical and mental toughness from both horse and rider. With a long-distance and a testing course, it is a true test of a horse’s staying power. The race often attracts a field of top-class hurdlers, making it a highlight of the festival.
The Stayers’ Hurdle is one of the marquee contests of the week and a race Will Smith and Dave Young always assess carefully throughout the season. With so many established stayers and emerging long-distance hurdlers clashing, it’s often a division where recent form can be interpreted in different ways.
You may see an ante-post take for the Stayers’ at various points in the build-up. When available, you’ll find the early selections listed on our racing ante-post tips page. This race can take shape earlier than others, so early prices can sometimes be worth snapping up.
Once the declarations are confirmed, race-day Stayers’ Hurdle selections will focus on proven staying ability, how each contender is likely to be ridden, and whether conditions will favour those who can grind it out from a long way out. Will and Dave put real emphasis on horses who’ve shown they can sustain a strong gallop over three miles or more.
It’s also a race that occasionally appears in Will Smith’s EW Lucky 15 during the Festival. The Stayers’ has produced some strong-priced performances in the past, making it a valuable addition to those daily multiples when Will sees the right kind of angle.
For extra ways to find value throughout Cheltenham 2027, remember you can follow our horse racing EP page to see which bookmakers are paying out on additional places for the Stayers’ Hurdle and other Cheltenham races.
The Stayers’ Hurdle almost always goes to a proven Grade 1 performer. Twenty-four of the last twenty-five winners had already placed at least at Grade 1 level, and all of the last twenty-four had won at least a Grade 2. Recent form is also key, with eighteen of the last twenty-two finishing first or second on their previous start.
Age trends are clear, with nine of the last twelve winners aged six or seven. Older winners are rare, as only eight horses aged nine or older have won since 1972, and seven of those were previous Festival winners. The Leopardstown Christmas Hurdle has been a strong trial, producing four of the last five winners.
The race is run over 2 miles, 7 furlongs and 213 yards on the New Course at Cheltenham.
The race is aimed at specialist staying hurdlers who are proven over three miles or further.
Yes, it is the championship race for staying hurdlers and carries Grade 1 status.
Yes, several horses have won the race more than once, including Flooring Porter (2001, 2002), Inglis Drever (2005, 2007, 2008), and Big Buck’s (4-time Stayers’ Hurdle Winner!).
Yes, it is one of the feature Grade 1 races on St Patrick’s Thursday.
