This race has strongly favoured older, experienced types. Nine of the last eleven winners were aged ten or eleven, and only one of the last thirty-six was older than eleven. Course form has been important too, with seven of the last eight winners aged over ten already course winners.
Recent form has also counted, with sixteen of the last eighteen finishing in the first three on their previous start. Eleven of the last fifteen winners were rated at least 134, and British-bred runners have struggled, going 1-96 since 2002.
The race is restricted to amateur jockeys.
It is run over 3 miles and 2 furlongs.
The race is for hunter chasers, many of whom compete in point-to-points or open hunter chases during the season. It’s often often considered the “Amateur Gold Cup”.
Yes, it takes place on the Friday of the Cheltenham Festival.
