For many, up until 3 weeks ago, the banker of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival would have been Final Demand in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase in the first race over fences on the Wednesday. However, a blip at the Dublin Racing Festival has illustrated just how fragile the notion of a ‘good thing’ really is.
Of course, history has painted a well-established picture of Willie Mullins’ horses bouncing back from a mid-winter blip to show up at the Cheltenham Festival, and it wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility for Final Demand to put in a performance that his previous ‘monster-like’ status had suggested. But it is worth noting that he surely ran below par at Cheltenham last year also… food for thought.
Amongst the other market principals, The Big Westerner would probably prefer it to keep raining (not currently forecast to), Kaid D’Authie has been a sneaky improver but will better ground and Cheltenham (poor run there last year) mean that he is best waited until Aintree or Punchestown for?
Western Fold is solid if unspectacular and you can’t help but feel he’ll find one or two too good on the day, and while the likes of Oscar’s Brother, Kitzbuhel and Salver are respected, they don’t realty make any kind of appeal at the prices.
Given his allocation of a UK rating was above the 145 ceiling for various handicap entries, and if the ground did come up very soft, then Willie Mullins’ Joystick would be no 50/1 shot, but a lot has to fall into place for him to do a ‘Lecky Watson.’
Instead, the bet right now must be the likeable Wendigo at 7/1 each-way with William Hill, Bet365 or 888Sport securing the ‘Non-Runner, Money Back’ concession in the process. Extremely unlucky not to finish a lot closer to the winner of last year’s Albert Bartlett, Wendigo clearly took well to the track and can put his steady improvement and experience to good use.
There doesn’t seem to be any box ‘unticked’ when it comes to Wendigo’s chances in the Brown Advisory and all things being equal, he simply must be in the shake-up.
WENDIGO may have been beaten in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day but he ran with great credit on a track that was not to his liking and rallied like the good horse that he is.
He was unlucky in last years’ Albert Bartlett to some degree and he’s shown a level of form that suggests he’s a serious staying chaser for the future, but also for right now.
He’s shown speed earlier this season and I think Cheltenham will bring the best out of him. While this is clearly a very competitive renewal. I think there’s every reason to believe he’ll be right on the premises at the business end and he rates as a good each way option in this contest.
WENDIGO – 0.5 STAR EW @ 9/1 (4 places 1/5)

The Brown Advisory has tended to reward established staying chasers rather than lightly raced types. All of the last twenty-four winners had already contested a graded chase, and the last eleven arrived with a BHA chase rating of at least 150. Most winners were aged seven or eight, with all but one of the last eighteen falling into that bracket.
The betting has been a solid guide, with nine of the last eleven winners coming from the top three in the market. Previous form at a high level has also been important, as seventeen of the last nineteen winners had already finished first or second in a Grade 2 chase or better.
The Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase is run over 3 miles on the New Course at Cheltenham, making it one of the key staying novice chases of the season.
It is open to novice chasers in their first season over fences, typically horses who have already shown strong form over hurdles before switching to chasing.
Yes, many winners and placed horses in the Brown Advisory have later gone on to contest, and sometimes win, the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Runners jump 19 fences over the three-mile trip.
Yes, proven staying ability is essential, particularly given the demanding uphill finish at Cheltenham.
