The nature of the weights and the market has a bit of an odd look to it for the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at 3.20 on Wednesday, and that is pretty much down to one horse – the extraordinary Stumptown.
Not only does he frame the race from a handicapping and weight perspective, but he also means that the market has a bit if a lopsided look, as only really 5 or 6 are considered. I think you could probably narrow that down even 3 or 4, as it is now the type of race where class will come to the fore.
The horse who makes the most appeal at the prices is without doubt Final Orders at 13/2 each-way generally for 4 places, as if you consider all of the course and distance form on offer for this race, his win here in December is by far and away the quickest time that any of these (including Stumptown and Favori De Champdou) have stopped the clock in.
It is clear that Keith Donoghue was never going to desert the mighty Stumptown, but Conor Stone-Walsh is an excellent pilot and Final Orders will give him a great spin on ground that will be much more to his liking than it will the other big two, Stumptown or Favori De Champdou. That for me just swayed it his way.
Very hard to build a case outside of his previous course and distance exploits but he did land the Velka Parbudicka back in October and while he’s new mark requires a career best effort on paper, a repeat of last years run would see him surely land this again. That came in first time cheek-pieces but blinkers have been preferred here and he’s won all of his last three starts fresh which suggests they may have left him fresh for this contest by design.
STUMPTOWN – 1 STAR WIN @ 7/2

The Cross Country Chase is a steeplechase race that takes place on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival, which is known as Ladies Day, and covers a distance of approximately 3 miles and 6 furlongs.
Unlike other steeplechase races at the Cheltenham Festival, the Cross Country Chase takes place on a specially designed course that includes a variety of different obstacles, including banks, ditches, and fences. The course is designed to test the horses’ jumping and stamina abilities, as well as their adaptability to different terrains and challenges.
The race is open to horses aged five years and older, and it often attracts a large field of runners from all over the world. The pace of the race can be slower than other steeplechases, as the horses must navigate a variety of different obstacles, and there are often changes in terrain and direction that require the horses to be agile and flexible.
Over the years, many legendary horses and jockeys have competed in the Cross Country Chase, including the likes of Tiger Roll, who won the race in 2018, 2019 and 2021, and jockey Keith Donoghue, who rode Tiger Roll to victory in all three of those years.

The Cross Country has become a race where market leaders tend to dominate. In five of the last six editions of the race, the first two home came from the front two in the betting, with the favourite winning the other. Age is also important, with six of the last eight winners aged under ten, while the remaining two were previous winners of the race.
Irish-trained runners have been hard to beat, winning seventeen of the last twenty, with Gordon Elliott responsible for six of the last eight. Course experience is almost essential, as sixteen of the last twenty winners had already run on this course, and seven of the last nine winners wore headgear.
The Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase is run over approximately 3 miles and 6 furlongs on Cheltenham’s specialist cross-country course.
The Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase is run on a unique course featuring banks, rails and varied obstacles rather than standard park fences. The layout is very different from the Old and New Courses used for most other races during the Festival.
The race typically attracts experienced chasers, many of whom specialise in cross-country events throughout the season.
No, it is run as a conditions race, meaning weights are allocated based on race conditions rather than official handicap ratings.
Yes, experience over similar obstacles and courses is often beneficial due to the unusual layout and varied jumping tests.
