With the form of Nicky Henderson’s horses looking particularly potent on Day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival, it has helped me whittle down the shortlist for the BetMGM Cup Handicap Hurdle to just the one bet, which may sound a little hopeful in such a cavalry charge.
But for me, there’s no getting away from the fact that Iberico Lord was super impressive in the Lanzarote Hurdle last time on what will be similar ground to Wednesday’s and should be backed at 9/1 each-way with Betfred for 6 places.
He can be a little in and out, but some of his Cheltenham form stands up to the closest scrutiny, most notably when running away with the Greatwood Hurdle a few seasons back. Nico De Boinville knows him well and if running to the same level as the Lanzarote, which is entirely possible given he runs well fresh, then he’ll not be far away.
Others that were considered were the Henry De Bromhead-trained pair of Forty Coats and Beckett Rock, but the first-named can look a little tricky and awkward at his hurdles, and the latter has been chasing for four starts and might be a little too ‘safe’ over his hurdles, on ground that is likely to not be soft enough.
So, it is Iberico Lord who carries the hopes of this column in the newly dubbed BetMGM Cup Handicap Hurdle at 2.40 on Wednesday of the Cheltenham Festival.
There are loads of horses with a favourable profile in this contest which means whittling down the field is no easy task. That said, THE YELLOW CLAY has long been on my mind for this contest given his liking for this track and I’m happy to excuse his efforts this season for one reason or another. It won’t be easy to shoulder Top Weight, but the application of first-time cheek-pieces can help him show his best effort and 7yo’s have a pretty solid record in this race.
I would like to take two against the field in here though and JINGKO BLUE is the one who takes top rank of the rest. Another 7yo who has yet to show his best in this sphere but ran with great credit behind Kabral Du Mathan on New Years’ Day and on a few occasions have shown performances that confirm his hurdle mark of 144 underestimates him.
THE YELLOW CLAY – 0.5 STAR EW @ 9/1 (6 places 1/5)
JINGKO BLUE – 0.5 STAR EW @ 9/1 (6 places 1/5)

The Coral Cup is a Grade 3 handicap hurdle race that has been a fixture of the Cheltenham Festival since 1993. It is run on the Old Course over a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs, and is open to horses aged four and older. The race is known for its competitive nature and often attracts large fields, making it a challenging test for both horses and jockeys.
The Coral Cup has produced some surprise winners in the past, with long-shot horses occasionally coming out on top. The race features a total of 10 hurdles to be jumped and horses often need to be both quick and agile to handle the tight turns and undulations of the course.
The Coral Cup has been won by some impressive horses over the years, including Spirit River, Whisper, and Supasundae.
For fans of handicap racing, the Coral Cup is a must-see event at the Cheltenham Festival. With a field of up to 28 horses, the race is often unpredictable and offers plenty of excitement and drama.
Finding the right Coral Cup tips can make a big difference in a race as competitive as this one. The Coral Cup is always a highlight on the Cheltenham card, drawing plenty of interest from punters looking for value. Our Coral Cup betting tips will help you make sense of the market, highlight runners who look well-treated, and point out potential each-way opportunities as the Festival approaches.
Because the Coral Cup attracts a large and competitive field, the early markets can sometimes leave a few contenders at bigger prices than expected. When that happens, you may see Coral Cup ante post tips on WhichBookie if there’s a clear case for locking in a price before the market shortens. Be sure to keep a look out for bookies offering non-runner no bet on Cheltenham races to protect your bet should your horse not be involved.
Once Cheltenham week is underway and the final line-up is known, racing analysts Will Smith and Dave Young will provide updated Coral Cup tips based on where the value sits on the day. This is a race that has also cropped up in Will Smith’s EW Lucky 15 in previous Festivals, particularly when a lively-priced each-way contender stands out.
The Coral Cup has been dominated by lightly raced hurdlers rather than exposed handicappers. Only six winners this century had more than nine hurdle runs going into the race, and fourteen of the last sixteen had no more than four runs that season. Age is a key factor too, with just one winner older than eight since 2007, while five-year-olds are 0-34 since 2015.
Trainer patterns stand out, with eleven of the last twelve winners trained by either Irish yards, Nicky Henderson or Dan Skelton. Big prices are common, as only four of the last seventeen winners returned at 12/1 or shorter, and previous Cheltenham experience has been a positive, with thirteen of the last sixteen having already run at the track.
The Coral Cup is run over 2 miles and 5 furlongs on the New Course at Cheltenham.
