From an ante-post perspective, these pages are pretty light on the novice races so far and I think that’s indicative of the open nature of all three over hurdles. As the season has developed, Old Park Star, Mighty Park and Doctor Steinberg have made themselves to the top of the markets for the Supreme, Turners and Albert Bartlett respectively.
They have done so with varying degrees of proof and evidence both visually and analytically, but I’m not sure that all three races should have favourites all shorter than 7/2 in places at this stage. It’s been fascinating picking through the form and substance of some of the likely runners at bigger prices in all three, and with that in mind I think there are a couple of wild priced picks to side with for Wednesday’s Turners Novices’ Hurdle.
Mighty Park, No Drama This End, Skylight Hustle, Ballyfad, Act Of Innocence and King Rasko Grey would all have grounds for recommendation but have any of them stood out to the degree that there isn’t room for some of those at bigger prices to shorten? Open to debate I’d say.
At 33/1 each-way generally ‘Non-Runner, Money Back,’ Laurets D’Estruval has all three entries at this stage but is certainly shorter on the exchanges for the Turners, and if you watch back his thumping Thurles win in the first week of February, I’m not sure there’s that much less of a ‘wow’ factor than if you watch Mighty Park’s win at Fairyhouse.
What’s more, comparing the sectional times with the now 135-rated Timeless Treaty, who won on the same card and who finished less than 2 lengths 3rd in a Grade 2 next time, and Laurets D’Estruval has absolutely thumped him. Now clearly more is needed to be competitive in a Turners, but he could just be flying under the radar a touch.
Flying further under the radar is Dan Skelton’s Soldier Reeves at 66/1 each-way NRMB with Coral or Ladbrokes, who has been confirmed as going for the race, has a win on the Old course (when the yard clearly didn’t expect it), and was withing hailing distance of Old Park Star at Haydock Park last time, staying on all the way to the line.
The step up to this trip is going to bring about any amount of improvement for Soldier Reeves, and should Old Park Star do what many expect him to do a day earlier, then suddenly being within 15 or so lengths of him over an inadequate trip, might just suddenly start to look pretty meritorious for Soldier Reeves.

Recent winners of the Turners have almost always arrived in strong form. Only four winners this century failed to win last time out, and the last ten all came here having won their previous two races. Proven quality also matters, with fourteen of the last seventeen winners already successful in a graded hurdle before the Festival.
Age has been a strong guide, with ten of the last twelve winners aged six, and winners are rarely over-raced, as none of the last eleven had more than three hurdle runs that season. Irish-trained runners have dominated, winning ten of the last twelve renewals, while horses starting at bigger prices have struggled, with only one of the last eighteen winners returning at odds above 8/1.
The Turners Novices’ Hurdle is run over 2 miles and 5 furlongs at Cheltenham on the New Course.
The race is restricted to novice hurdlers, meaning horses in their first season over hurdles. It regularly attracts some of the leading middle-distance novice hurdlers from Britain and Ireland.
Yes, it is a Grade 1 contest, which means it is run at level weights and represents the highest class of National Hunt racing for novice hurdlers.
While both races are for novice hurdlers, the Turners is run over a longer trip, so it tends to suit horses with proven stamina rather than out-and-out two-mile speed.
Yes, many past winners have progressed to open Grade 1 company and have later competed in races such as the Champion Hurdle or Stayers’ Hurdle.
