England’s Euro 2024 campaign gets underway with an opening match against Serbia at 8pm on 16th June. The game will take place at the new home ground of FC Schalke 04, the Veltins-Arena.
Drawn into Group C along with Denmark, Slovenia, and their first opponents, Serbia, England not only head into the tournament as clear favourites to top their group, but also as one of the leading runners to win the tournament.
Expectations are high for Gareth Southgate’s squad this year, but with that comes added pressure and nothing other than three points in their opening match will satisfy fans and keep the critics at bay.
However, this first game won’t be a walk in the park for England. Serbia have a wealth of talent in their squad with Milinkovic-Savic, Tadic, Vlahovic, Mitrovic, and Kostic a few names that spring to mind. They’ll certainly see this as a group they can progress from and will be eager to cause an upset by taking at least a point away from their opening match against the tournament favourites.
One concern for Serbia fans is their teams defence. Although they have the ability to be threatening in front of goal, their defence isn’t up to scratch. Looking back at their 2022 World Cup campaign, Serbia conceded 8 goals in their 3 games to finish bottom of their group. That included conceding two against Brazil and three against both Cameroon and Switzerland. Their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign looked a little more promising with 15 goals scored and 9 conceded in 8 games. However, they still managed to concede in all 6 of their most recent qualifying matches against Bulgaria, Hungary, Lithuania and Montenegro. England’s attack will pose a much bigger threat to Serbia’s back line than any of those teams and unless they drastically improve, it’s hard to see England not getting on the scoresheet multiple times in the game.
Harry Kane will be Southgate’s first name on the teamsheet and I’m backing him to bag a goal or two in England’s first game. He’s had a great opening season at Bayern Munich and if he carries that form into the Euro’s, he’ll be a strong contender for the Euro 2024 Top Scorer award if England go far.
This could be an exciting opening match and one that may appeal to those looking to have a few wagers on the game.
The stakes are high for England at Euro 2024. It could very well be Gareth Southgate’s final major tournament and they’re expected to progress from this group relatively comfortably. Although they may not be the most adventurous team, they are relatively consistent and rarely slip up against lesser opponents. I’m confident the players will be fully up for this opening match and the players have the experience, maturity and quality to see it out as winners.
However, Serbia are unlikely to sit back. They’ll go at England knowing that they’re capable of finding the back of the net. Therefore, both teams to score (BTTS), with England ultimately being ahead at the full time whistle, could be the bet to have on this game.
Prediction: England & BTTS @ 9/4 with bet365.
As mentioned above, both teams could find the net which gives us a few more options in terms of correct score. It’s not often England score more than 3 goals in major tournaments and I don’t expect that to change in this game. Therefore, England to win 2-1 or 3-1 is a likely outcome and if goals come earlier enough in the game, I think the latter provides the best value of the two.
Prediction: Serbia 1-3 England @ 12/1 with bet365.
With the attacking threat both teams pose, Over 2.5 Goals seems like a solid bet. If odds of 8/11 aren’t hugely appealing to you, you may wish to look at Over 3.5 Goals at a bigger price but I wouldn’t go higher than that for an opening match.
