The Gold Cup has been remarkably consistent in profile this century. All twenty-five winners were already Grade 1 winners, and seventeen of the last nineteen were rated 164 or higher before their victory. Recent form is key, with only three of the twenty-five failing to finish first or second on their previous start.
Age is another clear guide. No winner aged ten or older this century, and none older than eight since 2016. Irish-trained runners have dominated, winning nine of the last ten renewals, and only two winners returned at bigger than 10/1. Four of the last six favourites have justified their position in the market.
The Gold Cup is run over 3 miles, 2 furlongs and 70 yards on the New Course.
It is a Grade 1 steeplechase and is widely regarded as the most prestigious race in National Hunt racing.
Runners jump 22 fences over the extended three-mile trip.
Yes, it is the feature race of Gold Cup Day and the most anticipated race of the week.
