The London Gold Cup, or to give the race it’s official moniker, the Trade Nation London Gold Cup Handicap at 3.00 at Newbury on Saturday, is a race which year on year produces some of the season’s top middle distance 3-year-olds.
Not just handicappers either, as of the last 10 winners of the race, 3 have gone on to win Group 1’s and 4 have subsequently won Group 2’s. At first glance, I wouldn’t be fully sold on the idea of this year’s renewal throwing up similar types, and if there was one then it would presumably be Aidan O’Brien’s Chantilly, who is vying for favouritism with King’s Gambit and Goodwood Odyssey.
Indeed, I’m not convinced about any of those at the top of the market, and instead have two overpriced each-way Daily Value picks for WhichBookie to recommend in the race. The Charlie Johnston stable (and previously father Mark) often throw a few at the board for this race, and won it back in 2018 with Communique, a horse who was breaking his maiden on his second handicap start.
The only maiden in the whole field is their Individualism, who is worth supporting as a 2-star ** selections at 12/1 each-way with Paddy Power or William Hill for 4 places, to match the feat of Communique before him. Somehow, Individualism is still only rated 78, despite meeting with good support on almost all of his 5 racecourse starts, but it means he gets weight off all his rivals.
Being a half-brother to Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley, it was only a matter of time before Individualism was stepped up in trip, but patience has been the hallmark of his career so far as he has been a leggy, unfurnished type.
He has a speedier sire than those two half-brothers, and so 1m2f will probably be just about right at Newbury, particularly as he was staying on nicely over 1m behind the steeply progressive Ice Max at Musselburgh on his seasonal debut.
As well as Individualism at 12/1, the race shouldn’t pass without a small 1-star * bet on Go Daddy at a whopping 66/1 each-way with Paddy Power or Betfair Sportsbook for 4 places. He won a 1m2f nursery at Nottingham last season after an excellent run in a hot Sandown maiden, and given he was beaten miles behind Kalpana at Newmarket on his seasonal reappearance, it probably looks as if he has plateaued.
However, nothing else got into the race that day, and given Go Daddy was held up last of all for most of the journey, he actually ran a race full of promise, and he could step forward markedly here after being gelded over the winter.

We don’t provide tips for every race televised on ITV but as we cover all of the major racing festivals, many of our tips apply to ITV races and our tipsters will often provide an in depth preview of each day of festivals such as Cheltenham, Royal Ascot, Good wood and Galway.
Our racing tips are usually published in the morning but if you’d like to be notified when a new tip is posted, you can join our horse racing tips telegram group for free. This is recommended as the odds can fluctuate and move dramatically lower on certain selections once the value has been spotted !
For each tip that is published, we recommend a bookmaker to place the bet with. Of course, you can use any bookmaker that is offering odds on the specified race but there is a reason why we recommend bookies for certain bets. For example, if a tip is an Each Way selection, we may recommend a bookmaker offering Extra Places on the race. We also take odds into consideration and so if there aren’t any betting offers available on the race, we simply recommend the bookie offering the greatest odds. If you don’t have an account with the bookmaker we are suggesting to place the bet with and are interested in creating an account with them, be sure to check out our free bets page to find the latest welcome offer for that particular bookie.
Absolutely! In fact, you’ll often find our tipster Will Smith providing ante-post tips in the months leading up to the major festivals which can have a lot of value. Will has had great success at festivals such as Cheltenham and Royal Ascot by providing both winning ante-post and daily betting tips.
We keep a record of all of the tips suggested by Will and a record of every tip he has published can be found on his profile page which can be found here.
