When looking at any renewal of the Badger Beers Handicap Chase at Wincanton, run this Saturday at 3.00, the first (and sometimes only) port of call is with multiple champion trainer Paul Nicholls.

The Ditcheat maestro could easily have saddled the last five winners of the race, as either side of Present Man winning twice in 2017 and 2018 and Give Me A Copper winning in 2019, My Way somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory last year despite being 3 lengths up at the last, and Southfield Theatre unshipped Harry Cobden at the last in 2016 when likely to prevail.

So, to the 2021 running, and Nicholls has three entries, of which Truckers Lodge and Highland Hunter are jocked up, while the other Cat Tiger could well run in the Grand Sefton at Aintree instead. Truth is, I wouldn’t overly fancy any of the three, as the ground will be very much on the lively side for them.

Highland Hunter and Truckers Lodge have been campaigned in races that are usually characterised by hock deep mud, like the Welsh and Midlands Nationals, and chances are that Nicholls is using this race as a stepping stone for both.

So, given their prominence in the market, alongside that of El Presente and Potterman, who are passed over on account of lukewarm stable form for the former, and the latter having the Ladbrokes Trophy as his main autumn target, there must be some value to be had.

Of the horses that Christian Williams ran at the October Chepstow meeting, almost exclusively, they have taken a massive jump forward on their next starts – Kitty’s Light finished second in the Charlie Hall, Strictlyadancer won a competitive handicap chase at Cheltenham and Barden Bella went so close next time at Ffos Las.

So, it is hoped that his tough eight-year-old Cap Du Nord can take a similar jump, and it would have to be a sizable jump too as he was eventually beaten a long way behind Chirico Vallis at Chepstow.

But in a race dominated by prominent racers, Cap Du Nord was held up stone last, and worked his way into contention at the end of the back straight on the final circuit, before not being subjected to a hard time – or at least that’s what I gather, as the fashionable arty camera work that seems to be popular at the moment, meant we couldn’t see much behind the front hoofs of the leader!!

At 8/1 each-way widely, Cap Du Nord can prove to be yet another Christian Williams masterstroke in a valuable race, and it is very relevant that in the last two seasons, he has taken a huge step forward on his second start.

When allied to the fact that Cap Du Nord showed some of the best handicap chase form on offer last season, notably when chasing home Royale Pagaille at Kempton, a track not to dissimilar to Wincanton, all looks ready for a big run from him. At 8/1 each-way widely, he is worth locking in now, as he is one that the market could latch on to.

The other one to back now is the Fergal O’Brien-trained Hurricane Harvey, who also ran at Chepstow in October, in a race that actually looks classier than the Badger Beers Chase does.

It was won by his stablemate Paint The Dream, who was well backed on the day, and having jumped and travelled well for a long way, when Hurricane Harvey’s chance was gone, he too wasn’t given a hard race.

Always possessing the look of a potential staying chaser, Hurricane Harvey’s novice chase form in three runs last autumn reads well, and given one of those came here at Wincanton, when just being done for speed by the impressive Ga Law at this meeting, this looks a plan likely to come to fruition for the ever-impressive O’Brien.

Having had a wind op in the summer, and off the back of that eye-catching effort at Chepstow, Hurricane Harvey surely goes off shorter than the currently generally available 8/1 each-way, and so is very much an equal second string to the Badger Beers Handicap Chase bow, along with Cap Du Nord.

Old pal Some Chaos was strongly considered too, off the back of his rejuvenated effort at Chepstow, but that fact that he gives weight to two potentially improving young chasers in Cap Du Nord and Hurricane Harvey, meant that he was just passed over.
