This week has gone from the unlucky, to the near point of entertaining with how some of my selections have managed to go. If it wasn’t bad enough to have plenty of seconds to contend with, I had my two horses in the 2.30 yesterday fall and bring down the other, both when travelling sweetly at three out. It is fair to say it’s been a hard week luck wise as a result, but let’s hope for a decent finish.

Starting off with the 2.00 race, which is a 2m handicap hurdle and this race has plenty of horses returning after running earlier in the week. I felt unlucky with the run of Teed Up a few days ago, and he must go close here, but his price is terrible in comparison to what I was hoping, and I will be prepared to let him win at those prices. Instead, I am going to side with what seems like Tony Martin’s second string in Nibiru, who was unlucky at crucial stages in the race behind Teed Up to only finish fifth. He was cut off twice on the approach and after landing at 2 out, and would have been a lot closer otherwise. With Galway Hurdle winning rider Liam McKenna up, this horse may have an each way squeak. At a price of 17/2 with Paddy Power, who are paying out 5 places, he should be backed each way.

The 2.30 race is the 3m handicap hurdle and it feels like I am slightly going back in time backing all of these Tony Martin strong travelling types. However, he has had a good week and I am hoping that the return to a longer trip can be the making of Rebellious Gale, who won for us down in Limerick two starts ago and now returns to hurdling off a slightly higher mark. He won that day very nicely and he should be suited by this trip and these conditions. I feel he is a horse still ahead of the assessor, and he comes here off near bottom weight, which is advantageous. At 5/1 with Bet365, who offer 5 places, he also is an each way bet.

The 3.05 race is the 2m6f Memorial Chase and this seven runner field doesn’t lend itself to each way betting. As a result, I am going to be siding near the top of the market with Battleoverdoyen, who should be suited by these conditions and this race, having won it last season. He ran a very good race in the plate to finish fifth, and if backing up that form a few days later, should have the winning of this race. He faces some stiff opposition but on some of his best form, which includes plenty of Grade 1 form, he should be able to brush these away without much hassle. He’s 7/4 with Bet365, and should be winning.

The 3.40 race is the next race on the card, and this 2m2f handicap chase again features plenty of horses who have run earlier in the week and looking to back up some decent efforts. The horse I’m siding with ran a good race for us in the Galway Blazers, only to run out of puff late on and that is Russian Diamond. He showed plenty of zip in his jumping though and travelled with great enthusiasm, which I feel is a plus for him coming back down in trip now. If being able to jump and travel in the same vein of form this time around, he should be able to run a good race in this. At 6/1 with Bet365, who go 4 places each way bet, he is another bet.

I’m throwing everything at this last day for Galway, and I’m going to conclude the day’s proceedings with two selections in the 7 furlong Ahoonora Handicap at 4.10. Ado McGuinness has had a stranglehold on this race in recent years and similar to the Mile race earlier on this week, he saddles plenty of runners. I am going to side with two unlucky losers from Tuesday, starting off with Saltonstall, who endured a traumatic passage when trying to regain his BMW Mile crown, and subsequently finished well down the field. He looked like he was about to get into the race then though, so he is a well handicapped horse still, and Colin Keane reunites his partnership with the horse. At 9/1, with 5 places, he should be backed each way.

The other horse who I felt was a shade unlucky was Pierre Lapin, who finished like a train for fifth after being caught a long way back. He is drawn 1, which sometimes can be a hinderance, but for a horse who needs cover and seems to be at his best in between horses, this should suit him nicely. 7 furlongs should actually bring out better form in him, as he is sometimes not the most robust of stayers over a mile, and this strongly ran 7 could be right up his street. He will be picking his way through runners late on and hopefully run himself close. He’s 12/1 with Paddy Power, and should also be backed each way.
