It’s been a quiet few days after a helter-skelter time last weekend, but hopefully some nice priced selections for Saturday’s brilliant jumps action can go some way to making up for that.

Small fields are the order of the day at Ascot, due to the unseasonal dry weather, as was the case at the track on Friday. However, we are still treated to some real quality.

The Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase at 2.05 at Ascot shares the spotlight on the card down in Berkshire, with the Coral Hurdle at 2.40 – which I’ve sidestepped in terms of a bet. However, the 1965 Chase has a lovely betting shape to it, particularly with Betfred, who offer 3 places on the 6-runner affair.

Thankfully, there is a horse that I have been fairly keen on all week, who is just about still an each-way price (especially with the 3 places,) and still has just enough wriggle-room in terms of price too.

Firstly, it is a race where I would much rather be a layer of the current favourite Dashel Drasher at the likely odds of 5/2, given he is best on soft or heavy ground, is having his first run of the season for a yard that has yet to hit form, and is sadly without his regular pilot Matt Griffiths.

Putting any financial aspect aside, the heart would strongly want to see Dashel Drasher prevail for his hospitalised pal Griffiths, but the head says that he may find it tough.

The returning Defi Du Seuil and Lostintranslation have had plenty of previous set-to’s and on their best form would more than play a part in the finish. The pair, both fresh from wind operations, and from yards that are in good nick at present, are potential flies in this particular ointment.

But, the one horse who has plenty going for him in the Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase at 2.05 at Ascot, is Master Tommytucker, at 9/2 each-way with Betfred, who as stated, offer a lovely 3 places on the race.

An iffy jumper in the past, Master Tommytucker put in his best jumping display over course and distance when chasing home Dashel Drasher in the mud in February. On this better ground, and given he has had a spin over hurdles at Wetherby, where he went with zest for a long way on the unfavoured inside of the hurdles course, Master Tommytucker can turn around that form.

Sam Twiston-Davies takes the ride, and can add to his two previous wins on Master Tommytucker, and it was notable the rhythm the pair got into when winning at Haydock. At 9/2 each-way with Betfred, he is the bet of the day.

Up at Haydock Park, the obvious highlight will be the Betfair Chase at 3.00, and it is very much a watching brief for me, as I think that A Plus tard is the most likely winner, but wouldn’t want to back him at the best price of 13/8 with William Hill.

If there was one from left field at a whopping price, it could be Clondaw Castle at 33/1, but he could run a career best and still finish a close 5th or 6th, such is the quality of the 8 runners.

There are a couple of bets to be had in the valuable Betfair Exchange Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle at 2.25 at Haydock Park, which has attracted a competitive looking field. But plenty will have wanted softer ground, might not stay well enough, while a few perhaps lack the necessary quality.

One who definitely doesn’t lack the necessary quality is the classy If The Cap Fits, who at 14/1 each-way with William Hill, who offer 6 places, is ripe for a big run in his first ever handicap assignment.

A previous Grade 1 winner over 3m, If The Cap Fits has also won 2 Grade 2’s, and contested a whole host of other graded races, and has the reapplied cheekpieces to galvanise him after a nice prep run at Aintree.

Harry Fry has started the season well, and at 14/1 each-way with William Hill, If The Cap Fits can continue his good run.

Whichever way you play the race, you need to have an each-way saver on the Chepstow Silver Trophy winner Orby’s Legend, who will improve again for the step up to 3m here, having gone through the Chepstow race like a horse much better than his mark.

Kept fresh for this valuable prize since, Orby’s Legend must also be backed at 6/1 each-way with William Hill, taking advantage again, of those 6 places.
