Thyestes Day at Gowran Park is one of the most iconic National Hunt meetings of the entire calendar and the only thing that is disappointing is that I’m not going to be down there in attendance. The feature race looks just as competitive as ever – and it was a blessing to see ante-post selection, Longhouse Poet, entered in the race and hopefully some of you were able to procure the 20/1 last week. He is a general 9/1 shout this morning, and there might still be a bit of juice at that price. Alongside him, there are plenty of betting opportunities on the card this afternoon.

Starting off with the opening contest of the day, which is the 1.00 2m handicap hurdle and is a race for horses rated 80-102. This is typically competitive and you have plenty of local trainers trying to get a valuable winner on a big card such as this. The ground has been somewhat drying out, so albeit the racing is on soft ground, it certainly should not be quite as holding as it often can be for this meeting. With that in mind, there are possibilities that if allowed out in front again, Saga Aravis could make a bold show of backing up his facile victory last time out under Rob James at Naas. That jockey retains the ride, which is an important move, and he claims seven pounds – which is a relative steal given the ability of James in the saddle. That somewhat negates the rise this horse got for that Naas victory and drying ground will be in his favor. Unlike plenty of these, he has recent winning form and could be hard to catch. At a price of 7/1 with Bet365, who offer 5 places – he is an each way bet.

The 1.35 race is the 2m4f auction maiden hurdle for lady riders and a horse that was very unlucky to unseat over Christmas was Glengouly, who was traveling powerfully in what looked like a good maiden hurdle down in Limerick. His jumping had been electric up until that point where he showed a bit of over-exuberance and didn’t quite get there on the landing side. He arrives here with some of the best bumper form, having been beaten by the exciting Sandor Clegane two starts back, and he has the help of leading female jockey, Jody Townend on this occasion. His trainer, Willie Mullins always targets runners at his local big meeting, and this horse should be primed to go very close if avoiding another unfortunate error. At a strange price of 85/40 with Paddy Power, he should take some beating.

The 2.35 race is probably the hardest race on the card, which is saying something given some of the handicaps on show this afternoon – but this handicap hurdle over 2m4f looks to be a puzzle. I am going to take a flier on Instant Return in this race, at a huge price – who would have to have a decent chance if returning to the form he showed a couple of seasons ago as a juvenile. He won two on the bounce in that season before a good second, but he missed the entirety of last season with an injury and his two runs this year have been sub-par. However, his stable was in shocking form at the time and they have been able to turn that around in recent weeks and The Very Man won last weekend at Navan despite running poorly over the Christmas period. Off a mark of 119, he is handicapped to run well on some of his old form and I’m hopeful that some of the stable form can turn it around. At a price of 40/1 with Paddy Power, who offer 5 places – he is a small each way bet.

That leads us onto the main race of the day, and although I have made my case for Longhouse Poet, I am prepared to throw one more dart at the board for the race today. The Thyestes Chase can often suit certain horses and you can easily get repeat good performances in this race. With that in mind, I think last year’s winner Coko Beach looks to be too big a price based on his win last year. He sauntered clear in impressive style on that occasion, beating the well handicapped Run Wild Fred in the process, with the two well clear of the rest of the field. He seemed to love the demands that Gowran offered and he has been too far up in the weights to land a blow so far this season. Despite his recent form figures not causing much optimism, the fact he is now back down to 147 at his favorite track would offer some hope, and Davy Russell takes the ride. He will go from a handy position, which can often help in these big field handicaps, and could be primed to run well again. At 18/1 with William Hill, who offer 6 places for today’s big race, he is an each way bet.
