It has been a rocky month so far in September and with under 10 days to go at the end of the month, I need to act fast and efficiently. It’s as if the racing gods knew what I needed, and have supplied us all with a sumptuous eight race card at Listowel, including the Kerry National over 3 miles. These are the sort of meetings that if they don’t excite you to any degree, we’re not on the same wavelength. What has been slightly hard to decipher at Listowel in the last few days has been the ground, which has fluctuated greatly and has led to a number of biases on the flat track yesterday.

There are plenty of different selections today from Listowel, and it starts in the 1.40 race – which is a 2m maiden hurdle and has been cut up due to the absence of favourite, Favori de Champdou. This leaves the race as not being the most competitive in the world, and preference goes to Kilbeggan bumper scorer, Moulane West, who is making his hurdle debut today. Having ran some taking races in defeat, he ran away with a summer bumper by 9 lengths and was then thrust into a winners bumper at the Galway Festival. He failed to make an impact in that event, but this is a much weaker affair and if his jumping stands up, he should run a big race. At an each way price of 6/1 with Bet365, I will take that chance.

The 2.10 race is the second division of this 2m maiden hurdle and on the face of things, looks a lot more competitive. One of my horses to follow for the year runs in this race and I will be hoping that Gordon Dai Dai (NAP) can replicate his bumper form over hurdles this year. This Willie Burke trained gelding won his bumper impressively at Galway last October, but at a big price. It was hard to know whether that piece of form would last the test of time, but it wasn’t not useful and he backed that performance up with a good second in a winners bumper at the Punchestown Festival behind Dysart Dynamo. Again, one is taking a risk that he has not run over hurdles and has some smart prospects to overcome in this contest, but he should run a massive price. At a price of 10/3 with William Hill, he is my best bet of the day.

The 3.20 race is the first handicap of the day over 3 miles and is a 18 runner handicap hurdle race. Plenty of these horses arrive in decent form, but preference on this occasion is for My Immortal, for the Barry Connell team. Having won a PtP in impressive fashion, he was slightly disappointed in not getting his head in front in a bumper despite a few near misses. He was better on his hurdle debut, after a big hike up in trip to an extended 3 miles, he just prevailed in a pulsating finish. He is now entering his first handicap and the risk you run is that he hasn’t much experience in the bag over hurdles to be entering such a trappy affair. That being said, there should be more progression from him, and a mark of 116 doesn’t look too overbearing. At a price 13/2 with William Hill for 5 places, he is another each way bet.

The 4.25 is the feature race of the day and the 3m Kerry National has welcomed a packed field once again. First Reserve, Fairyhill Run, would have been my main selection for this race – but it is looking more and more unlikely that she will get a run, and therefore will be left alone for the purposes of this page. However, I do forewarn that I would back her if getting into the race. With that in mind, it’s two at big prices that appeal to me, and both of them know their way around big field handicaps.

Starting off with Snow Falcon, who won this race back in 2018 off a mark of 148, and returns here some 3 years later off a mark of 141. He has been dropped 3 pounds for a mid division effort in the Galway Plate, which seems lenient. He has not won since October 2019, which is a major concern, but he has been competing in races much more steeped in class than this one – and could make his presence felt in this race if on a going day. Sean Flanagan is booked on the old timer from the Noel Meade yard, and it would be a brilliant story if this horse could roll back the years. At a price of 22/1 with SkyBet, who offer 6 places, I’ll be backing each way.

Those who have followed for a while will remember that The Big Lense gave us one of our biggest winning days when landing the Midlands National this summer under a superb ride from Jody McGarvey. He then ran a good race off his revised mark when 6th in the Galway Blazers. This slight step back up in trip might be the unlocking of another bit of improvement from this horse, and I hope he can run well. He is also 22/1 with SkyBet for 6 places, and will also be an each way bet.

The last selection on this bumper midweek card comes in the 5.00 race. This could be known as one last roll of the dice on the frustrating Port Stanley. He is a horse that should have won a beginners chase by now, but has knocked his head off a few brick walls in the process. He comes up against The Bosses Oscar today, who will be a tough opponent and a hard horse to get by, but he could be slightly vulnerable on his first start over fences. Added to that is the tremendous form of Jessie Harrington, which has convinced me to go well one last time. He’s 10/3 with Paddy Power, which is enough of a price to convince me.
