There must not be much more satisfying feelings in punting terms when getting a big winner from a horse that you were almost about to let go. Bois Des Clamart was a horse that I had almost fallen over the edge with, but I trusted that the big handicap win might be still in the tank and yesterday he delivered those goods. I hope some managed to get on, and with the place of Western Zara to add to the mix – it was another good day. Navan today sets another difficult standard to aim at, with unprecedented good ground for the Troytown Handicap Chase, which could well send some strange results flying about.

The starting race on the card is the 12.50, which is a 2m handicap hurdle. There is no doubt that Dixie Flyer could well be the most well handicapped horse in this field and given his reputation – one would be slightly disappointed to not see him collect. However, he has fired a few blank darts for current connections and I am going to try and attack this race in the bigger price markets. The Dasher Conway looks like a horse to keep the right side of and even though his maiden hurdle win in May was ordinary form, he could well be better than this opening handicap mark. I have a feeling that this horse would not be as big a price with different connections, and therefore I feel should be afforded a chance. He has only ran the three times, which has already yielded a maiden hurdle win and should be able to run well under Keith Donoghue. At a price of 12/1 with Paddy Power, who offer 5 places, he is a good each way bet.

The 2.20 race is quite a similar handicap hurdle, but this time over 2m6f. As for the reason stated above, I was not too keen on the potential De Bromhead hotpot in the opener. However, I like the chances of his favourite in this contest, and I think that Gaspard Du Seuil could well be the bet of the day. Having gone very close last time out over this exact course and distance, when bumping into an improver, he looks primed to go and gain compensation this time around. He was only raised 3 pounds by the assessor for that recent run, which I think is lenient and he should have more than enough ability to win a handicap hurdle off a mark of 116. His Listowel maiden hurdle form looks solid in this context and he should run a big race. At a price of 2/1 with William Hill, he is short but should win.

This brings us on to the feature race of the day, which is the 2.50 Troytown Handicap Chase over 3 miles. It has a strange feeling to the race this year, as there are only 17 going to post on good ground, which is not what one could come to expect for a race of this nature. However, those closest to me will know the long love story that I have had with Run Wild Fred – where there have been many troughs and perhaps not enough peaks for my liking. However, he is undeniably consistent in these races and comes into this race with a decent chance. The ground would be a slight concern as I do think he is better on a softer surface, but he is handicapped to win races off this mark and Davy Russell is the booking we were all hoping for. At a price of 5/1 with Paddy Power, who offer 6 places – he is a solid each way bet.

However, I am also keen on one at a slightly bigger price in this field as well – and I’m more than happy to fire two bullets at such a competitive handicap. That horse is Discordantly – who represents a Jessie Harrington team who have had a decent record with their jumps horses so far this season. Discordantly has undergone a wing operation since we last saw him, and there is more than enough form in the book to suggest he could run well, especially with a reduced mark. Sean O’Keeffe takes the ride, and if he can manage to get this horse into a decent early rhythm, then he should be in the picture turning for home. He is off a lower mark than when finishing fourth in this race last year, and he shouldn’t be too inconvenienced by the slightly sounder terrain. At a price of 10/1 with Paddy Power, he should be backed each way as well.
