It has been a tame enough week on the tipping front over the last couple of days and therefore I am hopeful that the return to the weekend action can reignite the flames for a few good selections to run well. As racing fans, we are completely spoiled for choice today with the action – with exciting racing from Newbury, Warwick and Naas. The Betfair sponsored big race at Newbury is the big attraction of the day, and although the field for the Betfair Hurdle is littered with horses that have a chance, I have nominated two that I will be going to the well with, alongside a few selections from Naas.

The more obvious of the two for the Betfair Hurdle is the progressive JPR One for the Tizzard team and early signs are that this horse could well be a bit above the average and a mark of 130 could prove to be lenient in time. He has run the three times this season, and in all honesty still should be unbeaten. He was moved down late on at Cheltenham on his second run, when shaping like the best horse in the race, and his two wins either side of that have been impressive. He has shown a great attitude for jumping thus far and although this race will provide some hardships he has not had to face before, he may well have a class angle. At a price of 11/2 with the Betfair sponsors of the race, he is an each way selection with 5 places available.

The other horse that can’t go unbacked is the likable front-runner, Jetoile – who has form tied in with potentially the best British novice hurdler in Constitution Hill. Prior to that, he had won soft ground novice hurdles in convincing fashion and his never say die effort in second in the Tolworth Hurdle was an effort of substantial promise. He comes here feasibly handicapped and his young trainer must be delighted with the strides this horse has made this year. If getting loose on the front end, he will be hard to catch. He is 11/1 with sponsors Betfair, and that is also another each way bet.

Over at Naas, there are some highly competitive races which should garner some big clues for the spring festivals going forward. There are going to be a few short priced each way bets in this line-up, so if that doesn’t tickle your fancy – please don’t say you were not warned. The first race is the 1.40 which sees the exciting Journey with Me come back to make his second start over hurdles. His maiden win has stood up well and although the stable form has had some issues, the Grade 1 horses do still seem to be performing. However, I would be lying to say I don’t have a bit of a Kevin Keegan style ‘I would love it if we beat them’ attitude about the forgotten novice O’Toole. His bumper form is extraordinary and although his maiden win at Down Royal was no more than workmanlike, he should improve tonnes for that effort. This step up in trip is bound to help and connections believe they have a proper Grade 1 horse on their hands in time, so it will be interesting to see him put that to the test. At a price of 4/1 with Paddy Power, he is an each way bet.

The 2.15 maiden hurdle is also an interesting betting heat and it seems remiss of me to be looking any further than Meet and Greet, who surely comes into this race with a fine chance based on his hurdling debut earlier this season. He was a consistent and honest bumper horse last year, and his third over course and distance earlier this year was a grand introduction to obstacles. There are reasons to pick apart the top two in the market, as they are no world beaters – and this consistent horse could spring a small upset. At also a price of 4/1 with Paddy Power, I am going to be siding each way.

And the final bet on the muggy line of each way bets this afternoon at Naas comes in the 2m handicap hurdle at 3.25. Those will know that I hate playing short prices in these types of races, but honestly I couldn’t make a solid case for anything at a price, and the most likely horse was staring at me straight in the face. That horse is recent Gowran Park winner, Uncle Gerhard – who picked up in impressive fashion to mow Saga Aravis and The Toothpicker down in the closing moments on Thyestes Day. That was a marked improvement in form but I certainly would not rule out that this horse has more to give off his current mark and he could be well suited to go in again, with a track like Naas like to suit his running style. I am hoping for a good pace to aim at and for Uncle Gerhard to come late and fast. At a price of 4/1 with Paddy Power, who offer 5 places – he is an each way bet.
