It was a mixed bag full of results yesterday and it was slightly disappointing to not end up collecting on some of the races at Naas, despite having some well fancied runners. Meet and Greet made sure we came away with something from the day, and he is certainly one to keep the right side of this season and I would be interested to see whether he might head back to Naas for their Listed Novice Hurdle in a few weeks time, where he would have a good chance. Punchestown should be very interesting today and the ground has turned heavy overnight, which should lead to some energy sapping finishes.

None more so than the opening race on the card, which is the 1.40 Cross Country Banks Race and has a lot of the old pretenders coming back for another crack at this race. There are plenty in this race that have done it before and could bring us around this course and distance with their eyes closed. With the conditions the way they are, I am going to side with the horse that has the most experience and although the most vulnerable, is sure to run his customary solid race. That horse is Ballyboker Bridge for Sean O’Keeffe and Peter Maher, who is now a grand age of 15 but is showing no signs of his enthusiasm for the game waning. He is likely to go out in front and although he is vulnerable not to stay there, the 4 places on offer with Paddy Power should be taken. Ballyboker Bridge is 10/1 with that firm, which seems a more than fair price.

The 2.40 race is the stamina grueling 3m4f Grand National Trial Handicap Chase and the real issue here is trying to dissect which one of Gordon Elliot’s heavy battalion in this race will be the one to strike in today’s contest. He was won this race before with horses from left field who perhaps haven’t got the flashiest form figures to boot, and I am hopeful that might be the case with the formerly smart, Death Duty. At 11 years of age, he is not getting any younger or any better, but his runs this season would suggest that he should be highly competitive off this mark. This extra stamina test should be right up his street based off his last two efforts in lucrative handicaps and he is the pick of Jack Kennedy. There is enough to suggest that there might be a big run from him, and at a price of 8/1 with Paddy Power – I am going to take that risk, with four places being played each way.

The 3.10 race is a fascinating listed contest over 2m for novice hurdlers and this could be very interesting to see how the errant Largy Debut from Christmas can bounce back. He didn’t show his true colors that day, but plenty seem in a forgiving mood based on his price, and I am not as convinced. Instead, I will be siding with the underrated Slip of the Tongue, who arguably has by far the best form in this line up when third behind Teahupoo and Quilixious down in Limerick. He showed an aptitude for this surface on that occasion, and he has now bumped into stablemates of Gordon Elliot which I would have thought are ranked far superior to Au Fleuron, who he faces today. At a generous price of 4/1, I am going to keep my fingers crossed for a second winner in two days for Paudie Roche.

The 4.10 race is one of the trickiest races on the card over 2m7f and this handicap hurdle has plenty of unexposed runners looking to add to good recent runs. I am going to be siding with a heavy ground lover, in Itsnotinit – who gave us all a great day over Christmas down in Limerick. This enormous horse is a genuine lover of this ground and although he has been raised 8 pounds by the assessor, in-form Richie Deegan claims a vital 3 off his back. His tendency has been to save his best for Limerick over the last few seasons, but he has been a hard horse to stay sound and his other efforts don’t quite match those at Limerick. If arriving in the same form today as Christmas, he should be right in the mix. A price of 9/1 with Paddy Power, who offer 5 places, seems generous.

The 4.40 race is the finale on the card and the last selection from myself for today. Some of you may deem it as insanity to see me restore the faith in this horse, but I can’t get off the wheel of Musta Lovea Lovea just yet. However, the word is that the Mullins horse at the top of the betting may be very smart, and given the form they have been in with their bumper performers, it seems remiss to try to take him on. As a result, I have delved into the ‘Without the Favorite’ market for this race. McKiernan’s horse on his best form would have a great chance of filling the places and I’m advising punters to take 6/1 each-way on Musta Lovea Lovea without James Gate on Paddy Power, with 3 places available in that market.
