What a spectacular week of high-quality treats we have coming our way at the Punchestown Festival this week – chock full of tantalising Grade 1’s, fiendish handicaps, informative bumpers and a smattering of entertaining banks races.

Day one starts the week with a bang, and we have Envoi Allen v Monkfish in the Grade 1 Champion Novice Chase at 6.30. The irresistible force versus the immovable object if you will. But did they both just display chinks in their armour at the Cheltenham Festival? In the case of Envoi Allen, I’d say definitely so, as he was just a little too much on the boisterous side, and paid the price with a clumsy fall. He is stepping up to 3m for the first time here as well, and is the most vulnerable of the market leaders as I see it.

Monkfish was dossing about in the early stages of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, but once the race revved up, he was brilliant. A tired horse would in no way have been able to dodge and withstand the harrying from the loose Eklat De Rire that Monkfish received in the closing stages.

I am itching to back Colreevy at the prices, as she encounters a combination of 3m, good ground, a right-handed track and fences for the first time in her career. All factors that I think are her optimum set of conditions – it’s just she does so against two of the potential superstars of this generation! So, I have had to exercise restraint, for all that I think she’ll run a blinder.

The Grade 1 Champion Chase at 5.25 is another cracking match-up, with Allaho taking on stablemate Chacun Pour Soi and the Dan Skelton-trained raider Nube Negra. Allaho’s performance in the Ryanair was a thing of brutal beauty, but did that take a bit out of him maybe? And is Chacun Pour Soi vulnerable against tip-top opposition? If there is a bet here at the prices, it is Nube Negra, but again more of a watching brief for me.

In terms of a bet on day one, I’ll be having two in the Killashee Hotel Handicap Hurdle at 4.50, run over 2m – I think leading owner JP McManus has a great chance of scooping a chunk of the prize money, and hopefully at least the winners’ share with one of Magic Tricks and Cayd Boy.

Magic Tricks is available at 13/2 each-way with William Hill and Betfred (who offer six places), and being a brother to Abacadabras, he will love the chance to race on the best ground he has faced in his career to date – having been much better than the bare form when chasing home Galway Hurdle runner-up Hearts Are Trumps at Fairyhouse recently. He is also seemingly the choice of Mark Walsh.

While, Cayd Boy is a massive each-way price at 20/1 with Paddy Power, who also offer six places. A mid-race move in the County Hurdle meant that Cayd Boy’s effort petered out a little, but again he is another of JP McManus’ horses who will love getting on the decent ground.

The County Hurdle is already working out well with Belfast Banter and Milkwood proving it to be a race to follow, and Cayd Boy could add his name to that list, with the ever-impressive Simon Torrens taking the ride.
