It has been a quiet week so far on the tipping front as a combination of tricky meetings and changing ground conditions means that plenty has gone up in the air. I have tried to not force things too much, and despite some good cards from both Killarney and Sligo today – there are only a few betting opportunities likely on either cards. I have nominated my two best selections for the cards below.
The 8.10 race at the Sligo is the 1m5f maiden and this staying contest sees a few horses who have done some decent work over jumps during the winter and are now trying their hand at a different discipline. The Gossiper has not been seen since July last year, where he had a productive time of things in bumpers, while The Shunter has not been in his best form over jumps in recent starts. Instead, I am going to give a chance to Supreme Jet – who has been a horse I have held in high regard for some time, and he disappointed me with his performance at Punchestown last time out.
He gets a chance to redeem himself on this occasion, taking to the flat action for the first time and he may well have the speed for it, considering he has been keen in his hurdling starts in recent runs. He needs to show he can go at this pace, but given his trainer’s horses have been in good nick for a few months now – he could be up to the standard required. He is currently 4/1 with Paddy Power, which is a small price to be taking each way, but that is the way my safety conscious brain is going to play it.
The other selection comes from the 8.30 in Killarney, which is another long distance flat race and this 1m6f contest is one of the best races on the card. There are plenty of good horses on show in this race and I will be siding with potentially the classiest horse of the lot in My Mate Mozzie, who showed some fine form over hurdles when seen in the winter months, including being close up when finishing second in a Grade 1 novice hurdle. He was second on his only start on the flat last year, and was arguably a tad unlucky not to get the job done.
With 8 runners in this contest, there are at least a few threats to him in this race, including from some horses who are more flat specialists, but I think My Mate Mozzie might have the requisite class to get through that and to take out his first win on the level in his career. At a best price of 15/8 with Paddy Power, I think he is worth a winning bet on this occasion and hopefully he can do the job.
