The ground looks as if it might just be slightly on the improve into the weekend at Doncaster, and perhaps less likelihood of showers around on Saturday also.
That has shaped one or two potential angles and dropped them from the shortlist unless they do get some beefy showers tomorrow. But one 1-star * Daily Value selection still remains in the Betfred Park Stakes at 3.00 at Doncaster on Saturday, in the form of the 6/1 each-way about Marvelman.
It is a market dominated by Shadow Of Light, who hasn’t had the most straight-forward campaign but did run well in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat last time. However, the tongue-tie has gone on this season and despite running over a variety of trips, I’m not sure he’s been seeing his races out over any trip and so is ripe to take on as a general 13/8 favourite.
Marvelman is very much on an upward curve, as his three runs this season have been wildly progressive, culminating in an excellent 3rd in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury last time. Time might tell that could be the best piece of form on offer, as More Thunder continued his rise towards Group 1’s.
In racing nearer the stands side, Marvelman was notably away from where the other four of the first five home raced, and as a result I think you can mark up his run somewhat. At 6/1 each-way here, granted any more improvement and he has to be a player. The older horses like Al Aasy, Ten Bob Tony and Room Service will run their usual good races but might just be vulnerable to an improver like Marvelman.
At Leopardstown, I’ve a sneaky suspicion the ground may dry out a little. However, if it was ‘soft’ or worse then at the prices I’d be very interested in Sparks Fly in Matron Stakes at 4.25 and Hotazhell in the Irish Champion Stakes at 5.30. While I’m also very keen on Convergent in the CMG Group Stakes at 3.50, but 9/2 is fast disappearing and wouldn’t want to back at the general 10/3.

For me, it’s very hard to see away from SHADOW OF LIGHT in this contest because he’s quite simply the best horse in this race. Trip has been a bit of grey area this season and he is winless as a 3yo. That said, he’s posted a 119 and 114 RPR in two of his contests and he’s raced exclusively in Group 1’s. They also cited him as a speed horse at 2 then mentioned St James’ Palace early this season so I think 7 is about his perfect trip right now on balance and what we’ve seen this term.
No Buick sometimes can cause concern, but his peak RPR this season came under another jockey in that 2,000 guineas and Harry Bentley won nicely on him last season before Group 2 defeat back under Buick. I think ground will be absolutely ideal for him and there are no excuses for him if he doesn’t win this race.
SHADOW OF LIGHT – 1 STAR WIN @ 6/4
15:50 CMG Group Stakes (Group 3) – 1m4f
AL AASY did us a favour at Goodwood last month and while condition here are going to be slower, they were slow enough at Goodwood to expose him if it was going to be a serious concern.
With Jim Crowley side-lined, it’s Daniel Tudhope who comes to take the ride but while this is a new partnership, AL AASY has won with Dane O’Niell first time up, and once ridden by Tom Marquand he was just beaten by a better horse on the day, then under Cieren Fallon he wasn’t given the best ride in coming second to Al Qareem.
His form at this trip has been at a high standard for many years now and he’s in great form based on both his wins this season.
There is depth in here so it’s not an easy task, but I still believe he’s up to it.
AL AASY – 1 STAR WIN @ 15/8
16:50 CEPAC 25TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP – CLASS 2 – 1M
Hard to find a horse who ticks all of the boxes but I was caught up in SQUARE D’ALBONI as 3yo’s do alright in this race and he was a listed winner at the backend of last season on a now realistic mark of 100. That listed win came on heavy, won prior on good to soft and did start this season with Derby prospects. Probably did have an issue after that first run given he was last of 8 and not seen for a while since, but he’s now dropping back to 10f for the first time and there’s certainly enough in his formbook to suggest that his handicap debut could be a winning one
SQUARE D’ALBONI – 0.5 STAR EW @ 9/1 (3 places 1/5)

Our racing tips are usually published in the morning but if you’d like to be notified when a new tip is posted, you can join our horse racing tips telegram group for free. For each tip that is published, we recommend a bookmaker to place the bet with. Of course, you can use any bookmaker that is offering odds on the specified race but there is a reason why we recommend bookies for certain bets. For example, if a tip is an Each Way selection, we may recommend a bookmaker offering Extra Places on the race. We also take odds into consideration and so if there aren’t any betting offers available on the race, we simply recommend the bookie offering the greatest odds. If you don’t have an account with the bookmaker we are suggesting to place the bet with and are interested in creating an account with them, be sure to check out our free bets page to find the latest welcome offer for that particular bookie.
