Two Daily Value bets today for WhichBookie on the opening day of Cheltenham’s Showcase meeting, and in truth they are probably only ½-star recommendations as the racing generally at jumps HQ over the next two days is very trappy looking. There’ll be plenty of information to be gleaned from it, with the embarking jumps season in mind, but patience will be a virtue.
In the opening William Hill Each Way Extra Handicap Hurdle at 1.15 at Cheltenham, an early glance sees plenty of last season’s in-form handicappers turning up, but does that mean they’ll all (or even some) be ready, race-fit and/or suited to the nature of today’s race?
I think there could be a few red herrings in there with today’s contest in mind, and instead the general 16/1 each-way for 5 places about the Skeltons’ Service Minimum isn’t the worst bet in the world.
Some of her novice hurdle form is a fair chunk off the top end of the weights here, but she has been campaigned and ridden cleverly to beat or be competitive with the right horses in her early assignments, and with that in mind she will be better than a 113-rated animal in time.
She ran an eye-catching race in a valuable event at Worcester, where the winner got loose, and all the while she is gaining experience and improving. It might be that she is educated further today, before being found a valuable event down in grade, but her race fitness and profile will count for plenty today.
The other recommended small bet is the general 22/1 each-way about Paul’s Dream in the Oddschecker Novices’ Hurdle at 3.00 at Cheltenham, as she has been completely missed by the opening shows for this Grade 2.
There is a lot of hype around Un Sens A La Vie, and it might be that looking into the ‘without favourite’ markets could be wise here, but equally he has won two slowly run affairs against weak opposition and reappears 10 days later, having deviated slightly from the original plan.
Paul’s Dream is 22/1 due to her rating of 114 being inferior to those UK-trained horses ahead of her in the market, who have built up their experience in handicaps and as a result are generally rated 120+.
However, on the clock, if Paul’s Dream had been running in the types of races they have been, then she would have fared just as well if not better, and I love Danny Mullins in races like this where tactics and a big-race mentality count for so much.
1.15 Cheltenham – Handicap Hurdle – 2m4f
It was too far out to know for sure how FRENCH SHIP would have finished at Chepstow last time in the Silver Trophy but we do know he was in contention and he was strong in the market for that race. While this is clearly Plan B, he races off an unchanged mark and is still grossly unexposed as a hurdler. His known form over obstacles before that holds multiple efforts in the mid 120’s on RPR’s and with normal progression he should be much more capable than his current mark suggests.

2.25 Cheltenham – Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle – 2m½f
In this race last year NORMAN FLECTHER found only Impero too good and that effort came from just a 3lb lower mark. He won next time out and climbed to an Official Rating 6lbs higher than he races off now and while his jumping lacked fluency he was as good as I’ve seen him last time out in the Welsh Champion Hurdle when unusually making the pace. He’s 6lbs better off with King William Rufus for their April meeting face-off and he typically goes well as this time of year.

3.00 Cheltenham – Sharp Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) – 2m½f
Any race that has seen the likes of Altior has to be worth following and while very few horses would be able to live up to his mantle I do think UN SENS A LA VIE is much the best of this field. I’ve been disappointed with Fortune De Mer who now sports a first time hood and while I recognise his threat I simply think UN SENS A LA VIE is a better horse.
Both his runs under rules have come at Market Rasen which is quite a way off from being a Cheltenham type track and he was beaten left-handed in his first point to point so there is tempered enthusiasm. I do still want him onside because I’ve not seen anything in his two runs to suggest this direction will be a problem although it has been considered.
