Decent ground for QIPCO Champions Day at Ascot today, and with that being a rarity, it has produced some outstanding looking races and understandably harder than normal to find standout bets, as usually the soft ground autumn-peaking horses have come to the fore.
The QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes at 2.05 at Ascot was the race I have looked at the most and would have a shortlist of three horses who look overpriced – Inisherin, Rayevka and King Cuan.
However, track position and draw may play a significant hand here, but with the first 3f being run on the fresher far side of the straight course, before opening out to the whole track beyond that, it’s hard to know exactly where you might want to be.
Historically, closer to the far side and lower numbers have possibly been the way to go, and if that is the case and Royal Ascot winner Lazzat runs up to that form again from stall 7, then it may be immaterial, as that is the standout piece of form on offer.
However, if in stalls 12, 13 or 17, one of Inisherin, Rayevka or King Cuan can produce their best and are not disadvantaged by high(ish) draws, then they each could be players. In the end, it was all just too much of a quandary and I’ve left the race alone, like the QIPCO Champion Stakes at 4.05 and Balmoral Handicap at 4.40, where there were potential angles.
Old friend and Arc-absentee Almaqam is surely much better than a general 20/1 chance in the Champion Stakes, but with the ground potentially a little too fast and three superstars at the top of the market, it’s hard to recommend a bet on him. While in the Balmoral Handicap, Shout looks the right favourite, but two that might look decent each-way bets from either side of the draw are Ebt’s Guard in stall 1 and Oliver Show in stall 22, but best to see how the track is playing before delving in.
Today’s Daily Value selections for WhichBookie instead come from Newton Abbot and are shorter prices than this column normally deals with, but both should be clear favourites for their respective races and currently aren’t.
In the Weatherby’s And Birdie Calendars Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at 2.54 at Newton Abbot, David Pipe’s Lock Out was well backed and won his seasonal reappearance at Chepstow last year, and if in similar form for his first run this term can win a much lesser race today and is a 1-star * win only bet at a general 3/1.
Meanwhile, in the Remembering Len & Pam Cartwright Handicap Hurdle at 4.15 at Newton Abbot, the race looks chock full of in-form horses given the recent form figures, but the only one of those with striking form with a recent run behind them is Busy Busy Busy, who is a decent 1-star * bet at a general 7/2 win only, after an excellent seasonal reappearance in a better race over an inadequate trip.
2.05 Ascot – Champions Sprint Stakes (Group 1) – 6f
LAZZAT was hammered in the betting last time out for the Haydock Sprint Cup Stakes where he raced in the centre and the quartet who finished in front of him at the line were all racing near side. I’d built my case for Big Mojo in that race who took the spoils at a big price but with the prices between the duo now so close it means that course and distance and Jubilee stakes winner LAZZAT has to be the play now
LAZZAT – 3 STAR WIN @ 7/2
2.45 Ascot – Champions Fillies’ & Mares Stake (Group 1) – 1m4f
All the last 10 winners were drawn in stall 6 or higher which is only true for one of the front 5 in the market which is current favourite KALPANA. She was drawn wider than ideal in the Arc and while I’m pleased she still took up that engagement, there were doubts about whether she would after a disappointing preparation at Kempton the time before.
She took this race 12 months ago and while she’s not quite running up to the 6lbs higher weight she’ll have to shoulder this time round, she’s still shown plenty this season to confirm she’s a real talent and simply put, I think she’s the best horse in this race.
BEDTIME STORY was a very impressive winner at this track last season and I don’t think she’s been racing on ground that would have seen her to best effect this season but she’s still run with credit. She could be the fly in the ointment.
KALPANA – 1.5 STAR WIN @ 11/4
BEDTIME STORY – 0.5 STAR WIN @ 10/1
3.25 Ascot – Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Group 1) – 1m
FIELD OF GOLD produced one of the performances of the season at Royal Ascot by taking apart a strong looking field for all that the form of that race isn’t screaming out with validation. Very disappointing at Goodwood after when beaten by his own pacemaker but had two other runners ahead of him too. Left off since then with a known joint injury and he’s been a horse who can take a bit of riding but Colin Keane is back atop who is 2 from 2 on him, including in that course and distance win.
I’ve no doubt he’s the best horse in the race on his day, let’s just hope his issue has been ironed out and the return to a deeper race and this track will allow his day again
FIELD OF GOLD – 1 STAR WIN @ 15/8
4.05 Ascot – Champion Stakes (Group 1) – 1m2f
It’s not difficult to see why this race is seen as the best of the season before it’s been run as there’s a whole lot of depth in here but OMBUDSMAN is a rightful favourite and it’s really hard to shake the impressions he left following his Prince of Wales’ and Juddmonte victories.
The depth in this race is allowing us a price I still believe to be generous so I’m hoping he’ll close out the Group action on Champion Day with a win.
OMBUDSMAN – 2 STAR WIN @ 7/4

We also take odds into consideration and so if there aren’t any betting offers available on the race, we simply recommend the bookie offering the greatest odds. If you don’t have an account with the bookmaker we are suggesting to place the bet with and are interested in creating an account with them, be sure to check out our free bets page to find the latest welcome offer for that particular bookie.
