BetStars Review

Everything you need to know about BetStars

Shortly after launching back in 2001, Pokerstars quickly became the biggest online poker site in the world. 14 years later in 2015, Pokerstars decided to venture into the sports betting business with the launch of Betstars.

In this Betstars review, we’ll be taking a look at whether or not the bookmaker can achieve anywhere near the success of the poker site and what they have to offer to new and existing customers.

Sports & Betting Markets

Where some bookmakers offer betting markets on well over 30 different sports, Betstars list just 23. However, the sports which are missing on Betstars are most likely not ones which you’ll miss and we’re confident that sports which you bet on, can be found on Betstars. Sports such as Football, Basketball, Tennis, Horse Racing, Golf, Cricket, Rugby, Darts and Snooker all make an appearance on Betstars which should satisfy the majority of customers.

A full list of available sports can be seen below.

  • Alpine Skiing
  • American Football
  • Athletics
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Biathlon
  • Boxing/MMA
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • Esports
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Handball
  • Horse Racing
  • Ice Hockey
  • Rugby Union
  • Ski Jumping
  • Snooker
  • Specials
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Virtuals
  • Volleyball

There are a good number of betting markets for the majority of sports at Betstars. Taking a look at Premier League football matches, although we have come across bookmakers which offer a lot more markets, there is still in excess of 100 markets available to bet on which gives customers a good choice.

In-Play Betting

Click on the In-Play tab and you’ll be able to view all of the live events currently taking place which you can bet on. The layout of the in-play section at Betstars is particularly nice with a very clean and attractive design. Live events are categorised by sport for quick access and you can flick between fractional, decimal and American odds at the top of the list of events. For in-play football matches, we liked the football shirt icons which relate to the team they are alongside. This is just a little touch but looks good and actually helps you find the match you’re looking for a bit quicker.

In-play odds at Betstars seem reasonable. We compared them to some of the top online bookies and found that they were there or thereabouts in comparison. Overall, we had no complaints about the odds on offer.

Live Streaming

Customers at Betstars can watch horse racing live via live streams. Currently, no other sports are available to stream on Betstars. Races which are available to stream will display the ‘Play’ icon next to them and to watch these races you must have placed a bet on that race.

Streams provided by At The Races can be streamed via web browser, the poker client and via mobile and tablet devices whereas streams provided by Racing UK can only be accessed via a web browser.

Customer Service

Unfortunately, customer service is not one of Betstars’ strong points. It’s not that their support team is of a below-average standard but more that the contact options are lacking to say the least. Going off what other bookmakers offer currently, you would expect any bookmaker to offer at a minimum email and phone support. However, phone support is not available at Betstars and neither is Live Chat. Instead, customers have the option to either get in touch with the support team via email or via the contact form on the website. This really isn’t good enough as members who have urgent queries will have to wait for a reply via email which could take up to 24 hours.

We would like Betstars to add more support options in the future with a priority being live chat which is the most popular contact method used at online betting sites.

Betstars App

Betstars customers have the advantage of being able to bet through the Betstars app and having instant access to thousands of betting markets at their fingertips wherever they are.

The Betstars app is free to download and is available for both Android and iOS devices. The app is very similar to the Betstars mobile website and features everything which is on the desktop website. Users can place sports bets and access other features of the site such as cash out, in-play markets and account settings.

We found the Betstars app to be easy to use, fast to load and all-in-all a very pleasing experience.

The Website

The Betstars website is clean and bright and the boxed layout makes it feel more like a standard website that a bookmaker. Navigation around the site is easy thanks for a navbar which contains links to all of the most popular sports and there is a drop-down menu which includes additional sports.

The homepage contains a list of in-play and upcoming events and also a large number of ‘popular bets’. You’ll find the latest Betstars betting offers and promotions in the sidebar along with any special odds boosts for upcoming events.

Overall, the Betstars website is clean, fresh, fast loading and user-friendly. You can also head to Pokerstars and Pokerstars Casino with just a click from any page that you are on.

BetStars Casino

Betstars doesn’t actually have an online casino. However, just as Betstars is the sports betting side of Pokerstars, Pokerstars Casino is the casino side. All three websites feature in the header of each site which encourages users to get involved in as many as possible.

Pokerstars Casino has a huge number of games ranging from online slots to roulette, blackjack, baccarat and more. There are hundreds of slots to choose from provided by various game developers such as Playtech and NetEnt and featuring favourites such as Book of Dead, Dead or Alive and Starburst.

Betstars Live Casino

There is also a live casino section at BetStars where players can play various games with live dealers and croupiers for a more realistic casino experience. Live games include Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat, Three Card Poker, Super Sic Bo, Texas Hold’em Bonus, Dragon Tiger, Caribbean Stud Poker as well as a series of ‘lightning’ live games such as Lightning Roulette, Lightning Dice and Lightning Baccarat where the odds of random bets are boosted allowing for potentially huge wins.

Live host games such as Dream Catcher and Mega Ball are also available although some games are missing such as Deal or No Deal and Monopoly Live.

Betstars Virtual Sports

Although Betstars doesn’t offer the largest selection of virtual sports with Virtual Football, Virtual Rush Football, Virtual Horse Racing, Virtual Greyhounds and Virtual Motor Racing being available, they do make up for it in the number of betting markets for each event. Customers have a huge choice of markets for virtual events such as football and more than we’ve seen on the majority of other betting sites. Betstars also often run virtual sports promotions which usually are ‘Bet & Get’ offers which can have value if you bet on virtual sports.

PokerStars

Pokerstars is the poker side of Betstars and was established way before the sportsbook was. It is the biggest online poker site in the world and has attracted several millions of players worldwide since launching back in 2001.

Customers of Betstars can use their login details to play at Pokerstars and choose from a huge range of options when it comes to cash games and tournaments.

In 2003, a PokerStars.com online satellite tournament produced the World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion, Chris Moneymaker.

Banking

Customers have an excellent choice of methods when it comes to depositing and withdrawing from their accounts. As well as card payments via Visa & Mastercard, there is a good selection of e-wallets such as Neteller, Skrill and PayPal. Customers can also transfer funds from their Pokerstars account which can come in extremely handy if you play poker as well as place sports bets.

Available deposit and withdrawal methods at Betstars can be found in the table below.

Method Min Deposit Withdrawal Time
Visa £10 3-5 Days
Mastercard £10 3-5 Days
Neteller £10 1-2 Days
Paysafecard £10 1-2 Days
PayPal £10 1-2 Days

Account Settings

Odds Format: Customers can choose for the odds on the Betstars website to be displayed in either Decimal, Fractional or American format. A format can be selected using the drop-down menu at the top of the page.

Responsible Gambling: Responsible gambling information and settings can be accessed by clicking on the ’Responsible Gambling’ link which is in the top left corner of the website. There are a number of settings users can select to help stay in control of their gambling.

Deposit Limits: If you wish, you can limit the amount of money which you’re able to deposit into your Betstars account on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Self-Exclusion: Betstars allows customers to exclude themselves from Betstars products. When set, the user will not be able to access their account for the chosen length of time.

Summary

Although Betstars may not have yet achieved the level of success which Pokerstars has done, it does have a lot to offer. The website is attractive and easy to use, there is a reasonable number of betting markets for major sports available and there is a good number of promotions which will please the majority of customers.

I've been playing poker at Pokerstars for years and so being able to transfer funds to the Betstars is extremely handy when I want to place a bet. Not the best bookie out there but the convenience is enough for me.
